Russia has appealed to the authorities of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to peacefully resolve the conflict on the border. This is stated in the statement of the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.
The diplomat noted that Moscow welcomes the agreement of the parties on the cessation of fighting and the transition to dialogue. "We call on the parties, through further negotiations - in the spirit of alliance and good-neighborliness — to reach stable and long-term agreements that will allow normalizing the situation," she said in a statement.
According to Zakharova, the ministry supports the decision of Bishkek and Dushanbe to create a joint working group, which will also monitor the situation on the border. The diplomat stressed that Moscow is ready to "fully contribute to the resolution of any disputed issues" through diplomatic means.
Earlier, Tajikistan said that the republic will not cede its border lands to Kyrgyzstan, but is ready to resolve the conflict through negotiations. Before that, the parties agreed to end the armed conflict on the border.
Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan exchanged fire on the border on April 29. It began because of a water distribution point in the territory that both republics consider their own. Dushanbe claims that the Kyrgyz military tried to seize the water intake. Bishkek said Tajik border guards opened fire. Later, the clash turned into full-fledged battles. As a result of the conflict, at least three citizens of Tajikistan and three citizens of Kyrgyzstan were killed, the total number of victims exceeded 100 people.
