Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wanted to dissuade from expelling the ambassadors of ten countries. This is reported by TASS with reference to diplomatic sources of the Turkish ANKA agency.
Diplomats from the Turkish Foreign Ministry made efforts to dissuade the head of state from ordering the ambassadors to be declared persona non grata because of the call to release activist Osman Kavala.
Nevertheless, Erdogan issued a corresponding order to the Foreign Ministry on October 21. Attempts by diplomats to prevent such a development of events were unsuccessful.
The news agency claims that the ambassadors of the United States, Germany, Denmark, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Canada, Norway and New Zealand have not yet received a notification of expulsion from the Turkish authorities.
On October 18, the embassies of these countries called on Ankara to release Osman Kavala, an entrepreneur, founder of the Anadolu Kultur AS cultural Foundation, who was accused of participating in an attempted coup in 2016.
